Seattle, Washington-based Thavoron (Tav-er-on) shares his new single “My Man” set for digital release on June 7th via Trailing Twelve Records. Following the release of his single and music video for “Body”, Thavoron returns with his second single “My Man” - an anthemic reflection of the lengths a person will go to settle.

“My Man” is a continuation of Thavoron’s exploration into the many layers of love and heartbreak in queer relationships. While his recent single “Body” signaled a shift in perspective towards finding power in sex and intimacy, “My Man” highlights the negative characteristics of staying in a one-sided relationship. Thavoron shares his inspiration for the song below.

I just wanted to shift the narrative of the idea of the phrase ‘my man’ from a place of praise towards him as a person, to a reflection of myself and my values…you can tell a lot about people by the company they keep.

“My Man”, opens with a picked electric guitar and a single snare hit keeping tempo. Thavoron’s vocals, washed in reverb, describe an environment where one partner in a relationship does the bare minimum while the other finds every reason to stay. Crashing drums and lush vocals sweep through the second half of the chorus and release back into a simple guitar and vocal for the second verse. The production mirrors the tension and release of the internal struggle to stay or leave a mediocre relationship. The final chorus leads into an anthemic release as Thavoron calls out over explosive and muscular production.

I wanted to embrace the feeling of ‘yeah, I date men who are pretty terrible for me. I have really low standards, because I have low esteem, and I’m working on it.’

Thavoron uses the second verse and chorus lyrics to recontextualize his role within the song from that of a victim to someone who knows better but still stays.

The phrase ‘Because I don’t need him / I guess it’s easy being my man’ just feels so encapsulating of this feeling…knowing deep down I really don’t need a man to feel content or truly satisfied, it kind of lowers my guard in terms of what I’m willing to accept.

In the accompanying music video, directed by Maddie Ludgate, a suit-adorned Thavoron is juxtaposed with the soft and scenic environments.

The inspiration behind the video for My Man is congruency in staleness, repetition and controlled chaos— I wanted to reflect what it’s like to be encapsulated by beauty and liveliness, and to not be able to see how vibrant life and your surroundings are.

On the slowly thrumming “My Man,” which draws to a close with explosive choruses, Thavoron concludes that he doesn’t require a romantic partner to feel truly at home with himself.

Thavoron’s “My Man” is out on June 7th, 2024, on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.

BIO

Thavoron is a Cambodian American artist based in Seattle, Washington. Layering angelic vocals and intimate lyricism over heart-breaking sonic progressions, Thavoron pulls inspiration from contemporaries such as Frank Ocean, Faye Webster, and Bon Iver.

Growing up as a Cambodian-American and not feeling represented in the music industry, Thavoron hopes to help pave the way for Southeast/Asian American and queer artists alike looking for a sense of creative community,

“..being surrounded by people I couldn’t fully relate to resorted to me locking myself up in my bedroom to just write to try and make sense of all my differences as a person.”

With coverage including Under The Radar, Celebmix, METAL, Ones To Watch, Seattle Times, Unclear, and Before The Data, Thavoron’s music has been described as deeply reflective, vulnerable, and increasingly rare. Tackling themes like cultural identity, grief, and strained relationships, Thavoron crafts hauntingly melancholy songs that leave a lasting impression.
