Derek Simpson releases the first single “Saturn Returns” off of his upcoming third full-length album, ‘Somehow,’ available via Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Trailing Twelve Records presents “Saturn Returns”: the opening track off the upcoming third album Somehow from Los Angeles, California-based artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Derek Simpson. Experimentation is at the core of Somehow. Releasing each of the tracks in sequential order every Thursday for ten weeks straight, Simpson will give listeners a recurring opportunity to connect with each song individually, not too dissimilar from the weekly episode format of a bygone era.

On “Saturn Returns,” a gently strummed rhythm guitar keeps a steady heartbeat while buzzy and silky synths swirl in and out of space. Simpson’s intimate vocals carry a particular warmth that matches the song’s earnest reflection on kindness and connection.

The song opens with the lyrics: “put the spider outside / cause she’s not the enemy / they go, we go / brilliant sky / will you remember me? / day go, week go.” In only a few words, Simpson illustrates an interconnected world where the circle of life perseveres no matter the size or status of the creature. The melancholy yet freeing perspective that Saturn will return and time will continue whether or not we are there to witness it, is captured in the song’s accompanying music video.

The video begins with Simpson and his younger self occupying the same environments and actions. Depictions of nature are woven throughout the scenes, adding to the feeling of oneness between Simpson and the natural world. The video is shot entirely in black and white with fast-paced imagery cut together between longer reflective scenes.

“Saturn Returns” is out June 13th, on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records. Watch the music video below.
