Party of the Sun Sings The Trembling World On “Giver // River”
Party of the Sun releases “Giver // River” available August 7th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.
New Hampshire based psychedelic folk band Party of the Sun is set to captivate listeners with their latest double single, “Giver // River”, set for digital release on August 7th via Trailing Twelve Records. This new release explores the complexities of navigating unprecedented times through wailing guitar solos, contemplative lyrics, and a single crooning vocal.
Party of the Sun is composed of Ethan McBrien, Rory Hurley and Garrett Cameron. Prior to “Giver // River”, the band released five EPs and two full-lengths within a few short years. Their distinctive 70s-inspired sound landed them press coverage from esteemed publications like Atwood Magazine and Under the Radar, and their songs have been featured on popular shows like Deputy on Fox and Charmed on CW. With “Giver // River”, Party of the Sun continues to redefine a classic sound, offering a refreshing perspective on a world that often feels like it's hurling itself into disaster.
“Giver” begins with soft spoken electric guitars and a mid tempo rhythm, inviting the listener in with a warm welcome. The song opens with the lyrics “Give it death / give it strength / give legs and give it grace”, and evolves into a steady stream of consciousness. Lyrically, Party of the Sun imagines a million things to give to ‘it’ – “Give it cruelty / give it touch / give it a language / give it a crux / give it sequence / give it sight / give what a father leaves behind”. Through sometimes comical, sometimes heartbreaking lyrics, “Giver” lives an entire lifetime of growth, heartbreak, and eventual release.
In contrast, “River” adopts a more somber tone with melancholic instrumentation. Mirroring the lyrical introspection of “Giver”, an acoustic guitar grudgingly trudges along while the lead vocal pleads “The river of bodies and the river of war / the river of illness and river of more / the river in question is the river of peace / the river that's empty and the river that speaks”. The song’s final lyrics, “a river in progress / a river in mind / a river of roots is a river in time” reflects on the complexities of change and the search for peace.
“These songs are like sleds flying down a hill, you can jump into them, steer them where you like,” the band says. “Pick new words, new phrases, they're songs in motion, they were recorded quick and rough, they're about the scene, the tragedy of war's persistence, the lingering cure and the complexity of change.”
“Giver // River” is out August 7th via Trailing Twelve Records.
