Alesia Lani releases her new album ‘Self Titled’ available October 13th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Texas-based soul songstress Alesia Lani follows up her hard rock anthem “Breaking Me Down” with her genre-bending new album Self Titled set for digital release on October 13th through Los Angeles-based Trailing Twelve Records. Written through a global pandemic and the turbulence of divorce, the project symbolizes a rebirth for the artist. It acts as a reintroduction to her audience by expressing all sides of herself.

The collection of songs captures her edgy rock side while also creating space for vulnerability. Alesia describes treating the album like her “personal diary,” pouring her heart out into each song like pages in a journal. The listener rides this wave with Alesia as she unapologetically expresses her head space lyrically while simultaneously delivering compelling and boundary-pushing production.

The first track “I Don’t Mind” immediately launches the listener into Alesia’s world. A funky walking bass line reminiscent of Thundercat “Them Changes,” grounds the song as she confidently belts “I Don’t Mind / Don’t Waste My Time.” The song exudes a confidence that is threaded throughout the project as Alesia exudes a clear sense of self-worth.

This feeling is echoed in the album standout “Better” which sits under a percussive trap beat and a dark sub-bass, demonstrating Alesia’s ability to produce music that embodies self-empowerment within two sonically contrasting tracks. The song acts as a cathartic release of pent-up anger, reading lyrically almost as an open letter. Alesia reminds the recipient of her resilience despite everything that has been done to her saying, “Thought you caught me slippin’ / Never missed a beat / Everything done elevated baby times 3.” The final verse contextualizes who Alesia is addressing as she flips her well wishes onto the recipient of the song: “May think I’m hoping for the worst / But I’m wishing you the best / No more holding on to hurt / That went out with my wedding dress.”

The album’s first love song is track three’s “Lean Into You.” An acoustic guitar plays a Bossa Nova pattern creating a clear divide between the assertive and edgy sound from the previous tracks. Alesia creates a romantic atmosphere and lets her guard down as she invites the listener into the defenseless feelings of falling in love: “I try to fight it but I can’t win / When it comes to you I just give in / Cause I don’t really like nobody babe, nobody / Ain’t no complaints cause I’m so into you.”

Light and playful moments are sprinkled throughout the project like in the track “IDFWU.” The catchy and relatable lyrics demonstrate a confident character packaged in a light-hearted mellifluous track; conversely, the sultry track “Ay Mama” serves as an outlet for Alesia to express her sexuality with an anthemic background vocal repeating the song’s title “Ay Mama” as she displays her vast vocal range.

Self Titled ranges in both genre and emotion. The project as a whole illustrates a powerful journey. Unbound by the opinions of others, or the “industry standard” Alesia Lani demonstrates her diversity and creativity, exploring all aspects of human emotion.

“I just want want to thank everyone who had a hand in this project. I have to say it’s the most special to me by far…but there’s more to come.”

Alesia Lani’s Self Titled is out October 13th, 2023 on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.
