Derek Simpson releases “boytoy” off of his upcoming third full-length album, ‘Somehow’, available on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Derek Simpson releases “boytoy”, the seventh single off of his third full-length album "Somehow”, set for digital release on July 18th via Trailing Twelve Records. Every Thursday for ten weeks straight, Simpson shares a new song, offering listeners an opportunity to explore an immersive audio-visual landscape. Every track possesses a unique textural palette, endorsed by his signature pop-electronic production.

The playful tone of “boytoy” is set with the opening remark, “You’re a sexy boy”, spoken by Smooth Jas, and a smug “Thank you”, from Derek. A gritty, pulsating synth bass then lays the groundwork for a head-bobbing drum rhythm. These elements work unanimously to introduce Simpson’s hooky verse.

Play with me everyday / You know just what to say / To turn me into the boytoy / It’s turning me into the boytoy.

In “boytoy”, Simpson contrasts enticing darkness with tongue-in-cheek lyrics to offer himself up as a proverbial doll with an ability to fulfill all whims and desires. He begs the listener to “Twist my arm ‘til it breaks”, and reinforces his passivity with the line “I’ll do what I’m told just call me boytoy”. The lyrics take a flirtatious turn when Simpson sings, “One more night with your boytoy / Turn off the light and touch your boytoy / Trying new poses when you want some fun / You out here show and tellin’ everyone.”

“boytoy”  then erupts into a Hendrixian guitar solo before returning to the steady pulse of the drums and bass. The song’s dynamic range is mirrored in the accompanying visualizer, which pictures Simpson in numerous outfits, styles and poses. He jokingly smiles while bundled up in an oversized jacket before the camera cuts to him unsuccessfully pulling a shirt off of his back. He throws a sweater to the ground in frustration right before the visualizer restarts, depicting a smiling, buttoned-up Derek ready to unravel himself all over again.

Derek Simpson’s “boytoy” is a lighthearted exploration of finding enough peace within one’s self to offer love, positivity and the present moment to someone else. “boytoy” will be available on July 18th, 2024 on all digital platforms via Trailing Twelve Records.
