Grace Kay releases her new single “Actress,” available October 18th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Grace Kay releases her new single “Actress”, set for digital release on October 18th via Trailing Twelve Records. The track showcases Kay’s artistry as her vocals glide effortlessly over retro synth pads. Pulsating drums propel the song to a new realm of ethereal pop. With “Actress,” Grace Kay reaffirms her status as a trailblazing artist, intertwining themes of vulnerability, empowerment, and self-reclamation.

Hailing from Los Angeles and shaped by her experience at an all-girls high school, Kay’s music reflects her deep commitment to empowering women. Kay went on to earn a degree in acting from the University of Southern California, which heavily influenced her storytelling in songwriting. Her signature sound blends refined, punchy synth-pop production with intricate rhythms and lush vocal textures, appealing to fans of MUNA, The Japanese House, Imogen Heap, and Caroline Polachek. Kay’s music has received widespread fan support, garnering press coverage from Under the Radar, Ones To Watch, and Atwood, official playlist features on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Pop, and sync placements on ABC’s A Million Little Things, CBS’s True Lies, and MTV’s West Coast Hustle.

On “Actress,” percussive synth hooks intertwine with a driving drum machine while Kay’s vocals, accompanied by expansive reverb, leave the listener time to linger with every lyric. The song opens with the lines, “Girl next door and I know all the lines / Meeting all my friends yours will never be mine / We dance, I let you lead / Follow / Lay down, I’ll meet your needs / Follow”. Kay immediately sets a confessional tone as she explores the persona she assumes for a love interest. This theme deepens in the chorus with, “Frozen in the spotlight / Memorized, but tongue-tied / Mesmerized by my lies / While I’m playing on your timeline.”

"While I'd love to say this song and my next project are all about spiraling into anxiety and blaming the men I've dated in the past, it goes deeper than that,” she says. “The main theme of ‘Actress’ and the upcoming project is how I molded and transformed myself into someone I didn't recognize; someone that would fit perfectly into ‘this guy's’ life. Throwing away my sense of self was the deadliest weapon used against my mind in my 20s, and being on the other side of it now, I have the clarity to recognize it."

The brilliantly confessional pop track closes with a syncopated breakdown, infused with vocal chops and synth bass. This is the first single that will be part of a larger project centering around themes of fulfilling someone else’s desires before your own.

“Actress” is out October 18th, 2024 on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.

PRESS & FEATURES

“Kay is already well on her way to conquering the electropop world with the upbeat syncopation of her previous singles “play” and “fool” (plus one hell of a slowed and contemplative take on ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”). With “Here,” she trades the playful tones and club-ready production for hazy, nostalgic soundscapes reminiscent of M83 at their deepest rearview-gazing.” - Atwood Magazine

Kay balances the dancefloor ready gloss with a sincere emotive core, offering words of gentle encouragement with warm lyricism and poetic imagery.” - Under the Radar

“Between enlightened metaphors and a glowing delivery, "renaissance" pushes listeners to adopt even a touch of the idealism that the rising artist displays so confidently.” - Sheesh
