Corserine Returns with Electrifying 'Oblivion' EP (31 May 2024)

Corserine, Symmetry LP

Corserine release their EP ‘Oblivion’ on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Electronic music collective Corserine follows up their debut album Symmetry with the release of a four-song EP titled Oblivion via Los Angeles-based label Trailing Twelve Records. After establishing themselves within the synthwave genre, Oblivion serves as an exploration of contemporary production techniques and experimental grooves. The artwork alone reflects a change in tone - from the bold magenta and neon-blue geometric patterns to the textural composition of deep shades of red and indigo. Combining the strengths of Scottish songwriter/producer Caro Tyle and synth-wizard Gylen Boardman with California-based engineer Cam Perridge, Corserine continues to maintain their dreamy pop texture and gritty electro sound while adding intriguing new elements.

I grew up with a lot of rare groove and soul and this is reflected in the new music. Oblivion can mean many things but to me it's a comment on something we can't control or care for. - Caro Tyle of Corserine

The EP begins with "Should Be in Bed," characterized by a driving four-on-the-floor kick and a vocoder reminiscent of electro heavy-weights Daft Punk. The production unfolds to reveal an infectious vocal chop, accompanied by swirling synths, culminating in a dancefloor-ready groove.

Following suit, the second track and lead single "You Can Rest Easy" features guest vocals from Atlanta-based Arkine. Retro percussion, warm synth beds, and a pulsating bass provide the backdrop for Arkine's yearning vocals detailing a tumultuous breakup. Before a stunning guitar solo (a staple for any Corserine die-hard), the song briefly shifts into a dreamlike bridge with modern trap percussion and aquatic keys - an inventive nod to the vibrant trap and hip-hop scene of Arkine’s city.

"Greatest Of All" is a stylish and confident track featuring lounge synth chords, driving percussions, syncopated bass, glam guitar stabs, and swanky saxophone accents. With a dreamy female vocal looping the refrain "We’re on the way to something great," the song exudes optimism and determination. Its middle breakdown strips away percussion elements, allowing listeners to float amidst ethereal synths before an orchestral sample reintroduces an uptempo groove with added tension. This dynamic blend of retro-inspired instrumentation and modern production creates a captivating and uplifting atmosphere throughout the song.

The final and titular track is designed to cap off a night of dancing with its powerful bass line, groovy muted guitar, and catchy synth melody. Corserine masterfully plays with tension and release, keeping the listener engaged as elements are introduced and removed throughout the track.

Oblivion marks a significant evolution for the electronic music collective, showcasing their ability to push boundaries within the genre while staying true to their signature style.

Corserine's Oblivion is out May 31st on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.

BIO

Corserine is an electronic music collective of childhood friends from California and central Scotland, formed in 2019. The project is a vehicle for the ideas of Caro Tyle (songwriting, production), Gylen Boardman (synthesizers), and Cam Perridge (engineer), with many of their songs featuring guest vocalists and musicians.

Growing up in Scotland in the 1980s, the members were all surrounded by a unique blend of musical genres and pop culture. With his mother and sister being classically trained pianists, Tyle first honed his skills as a guitarist in various rock and punk bands. In addition to having an encyclopedic knowledge of synthesizers, Boardman is classically trained in cello. The members cite various 1980’s science fiction films as both thematic and sonic inspiration - “in those films, there’s always a nightclub scene set in the not-too-distant futuristic dystopia. We’re basically making the music playing in those scenes.”

Corserine’s blend of dreamy pop textures, gritty electro, and muscular rhythms will please fans of Tycho, Com Truise, and Neon Indian.
