Fresno, California-based roman around releases their highly anticipated debut album, Tell Me All About You, set for digital and physical release on January 20th through Trailing Twelve Records. After a string of critically acclaimed singles, roman around happily invites you on an intimate journey inside their head; eight cutting edge tracks filled with woozy guitars, glossy synths, and confessional lyrics.

roman around acts as a vehicle for the songs of Roman Rivera, an accomplished drummer, and multi-instrumentalist. The multi-racial artist grew up in Fresno, CA, where they currently serve as a music educator. Rivera challenges traditional gender norms while fostering a safe place for themselves and others in the LGBTQ+, POC, music, and general community. After breaking onto the scene with the release of Star Signs in January of 2021, Roman set the stage for what would become their signature sound. Blending together dazzling percussion, cosmic synths, and burly bass tones that beautifully contrast Rivera’s airy and emotionally raspy vocals.

Following their breakout single was the delirious DNT, a bleary-eyed ballad focusing on abusive relationships. DNT uses lush ambiance, underwater synths, jagged guitar, and gritty bass to construct a hypnotic and mysterious groove. The accompanying music video expands on the idea of how a toxic relationship can create a feeling of isolation as it shows Rivera in various modes of solitude, e.g. painting a blank canvas at the dining room table, laying on the living room floor, strumming a guitar in a moody rehearsal space.

Tell Me All About You has a stream of consciousness quality, while listening one gets the sense that Rivera is singing about whatever is crossing their mind at any given moment. Whether it be the loss of a dear pet (Rhythm), toxic relationships (DNT), or the systematic destruction of the environment (Bear The Burden), Tell Me All About You feels like digging through a personal diary. Rivera discusses the inspirations behind the album in their own words below,

“Each track explores each subject without having to name it verbatim, and helps discover the unhidden meanings in the many various things that surround us all”

On previously unreleased Comes With Age, Rivera’s vocals overtake a sonically sparse soundscape, as they sing about the perils of maturing at a pace separate from the people around them: “Maybe I’m a little too old now / Everyone moved out of town / I’m hanging around people I don't like / on the freeway wondering if I’ll die tonight”. Delicate strings curate an otherworldly vibe, effortlessly sucking the atmosphere out of the room.

roman around has developed a devoted following of critics and listeners alike. Recently they performed at LA's KCRW Chinatown Summer Nights and WFNM showcase. Previous songs have premiered on the award-winning radio station KCRW “Morning Becomes Eclectic” with editorial playlisting by Spotify Fresh Finds and critical acclaim from tastemaker sites including METAL, Dummy, Ones To Watch, and Grimy Goods.

roman around is the vehicle for the music composed and arranged by Roman Rivera (they/them). The multi-racial artist grew up in Fresno, CA, where they currently serve as a music educator. Rivera challenges traditional gender norms while fostering a safe place for themselves and others in the LGBTQ+, POC, music, and general community.

In their late teenage years, after touring the country as a drummer for various bands, Rivera began experimenting with writing their own music. Years of communal exposure to beat making, singing, guitar, and drumming allowed them to quickly craft their own vision.

roman around's sound blends hypnotic rhythms, hazy atmospheres, and shadowy textures that will please fans of From Indian Lakes, Cocteau Twins, DIIV, and Toro Y Moi.

Performing with various musicians in Fresno, their band can range from a multitude of different members. Rivera is currently attending CSU Fresno and working as a music teacher while they continue to write, release, and perform music via roman around. Rivera identifies as non-binary and pansexual, an identity they are proud to represent within the LGBTQ community.
