Footings “Bayou” distills the beauty of the unknown - (5/5/21)

Footings shares their latest single “Bayou,” available May 5th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.
New Hampshire based art-rock outfit Footings aligns with LA label Trailing Twelve for their latest single “Bayou”. The follow-up to their slow-core dirge “Later Days” is a delicate lullaby on the beauty of memory and the unknown.
The song begins with band leader Eric Gagne’s soft and relaxed acoustic guitar plucking supported by the whisper of distant string ensemble. The gentle layering on composition is then heightened by Gagne and bandmate Candace Clement’s conversational duet. The choice to have two vocalists feels calculated and intentional, as to represent the shared connection of strangers.
“The only thing we know is the undertow” remark Gagne and Clement, serving as a quiet acceptance of that which is out of our control.
Gagne shared some insight into how the song came out:
I went on a surfing trip to the west coast of Nicaragua a few years back. One day, everyone took the trip to Leon to rattle around there on a day with choppy waves, but I stayed behind. I spent most of the day recovering from a night out drinking tequila, sitting on this creaky covered porch overlooking the ocean. The beach was wild horses and packs of dogs playing in the shallow water. There were cops with machine guns stealing fish from the fishermen coming in from the morning work. I drank cold beer and smoked lousy weed, playing this old beat up acoustic guitar, scratching down lyrics and chords as I went. Bayou was written right there, finished as the halfmoon started rising, looking like a kid's drawing of a boat.
“Bayou” is out May 5, 2021 on Trailing Twelve.
