Get lost in the hypnotic intimacy of Derek Simpson’s “Hide + Seek” - (6/3/20)

Derek Simpson shares their latest single “Hide + Seek,” available June 3rd on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.
Back in August 2019, Derek Simpson dropped his spectacularly eclectic debut KiNG SUN LP. The 11-track album boasted early singles like the bouncy zen-anthem “Nothing” and the sunny-side beach bop “Open Water. Today, Derek Simpson is back with “Hide + Seek”, a hypnotic slow jam that aspires to transcend space and time.
According to Simpson, the majority of the track came about in a single afternoon. “I just followed this groove as far as it would take me one afternoon and that wound up being the bulk of what you hear in the record,” he explains. “I wanted to convey a hypnotic intimacy in the lyrics as well, and that vibe became so much more prominent with the lovely vocal contributions of my good friends Gracie Gray and Joshua Tarantino.” The production was completed with the addition of elegant piano by The White Electric and the introductory UFO beam by Alessandro Maione.
Described as a “seductive incantation,” the track evokes a care-free and intoxicating intimacy with playful imagery of sprawling out in gardens and smoke-filled bedrooms. A steady and meditative dose of alternative R&B; relaxed and confident vocals weave in and out of syrupy guitar that lulls the listener into a tingly euphoria. The song aims to “capture that feeling you get when you first start to realize that you and another person have an unspoken attraction, but it's too early for you to know exactly what that chemistry means or how you'd like to interact with it.”
“Hide + Seek” is out June 3, 2020 on Trailing Twelve.

Derek Simpson is an American recording artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. After gaining success with multiple free album releases on Soundcloud (under the pseudonym Planetarian) from 2013 to 2016, Derek moved from Boston to Long Beach to continue recording his own music and surround himself with other up-and-coming artists in need of songwriting help and production. Layering spacey guitar chords and electric piano lines with dense and introspective wordplay, Derek's music often explores the value of holding a positive perspective in the face of confusion or adversity. His respect for focus and hard work shows in his recordings, all of which are fully written, produced, composed, and mixed by himself.
Derek has produced music for Kevin Abstract, Dom McLennon, Rockie Fresh and more. His music has also been featured in Comedy Central's Workaholics.
